One of the most exquisite structures in the world, the architectural marvel of the Mughal dynasty was commissioned by Emperor Shah Jehan in the 17th century.

According to data released by the government, the famous Taj Mahal in Agra generated the “highest income” from ticket sales among the ASI-protected monuments during FY19–20 and FY23–24.

Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat gave the data in a written response to a query in Rajya Sabha.

He was asked how much money the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has made from the sale of admission tickets to different monuments over the past five years, both by year and per monument, as well as which monuments have made the most money from this revenue.

The ministry responded by providing the statistics in tabular form for the fiscal year cycles from FY19–20 to FY23–24.

The Taj Mahal was awarded the top spot for each of the five years, based on the data.

The Qutub Minar in Delhi and the Agra Fort in Agra came in second and third place, respectively, in FY19–20.

Sun Temple in Konark and the Group of Monuments Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu came in second and third place, respectively, in FY20–21. Qutub Minar and Delhi’s Red Fort were in second and third place in FY23–24, respectively.
