This summer, Liverpool arguably rewrote football transfer history.

Not only did they break the bank this summer by spending £449 million on acquisitions in a single window — the highest-ever spending spree in Premier League history — but they also became the first club to purchase two players for more than €100 million in the same transfer window.

Isak and Wirtz Break New Ground.

Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were the club’s star signings, coming from Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen, respectively. Isak’s £125 million deal broke the British transfer record, and Wirtz followed for £116.5 million, placing both among the most expensive players in international football.

Interestingly, until this summer, Liverpool had never spent more than £100 million on a player. Within weeks, they had done so again, signaling a dramatic turnaround in the club’s transfer policy.

Wirtz and Isak were the only €100 million+ signings of the 2025 window, joining a select group of only 19 players who have been sold for such sums. They are the tenth and eleventh players to hit the €100 million mark.

How Liverpool’s Feat Stands Out

Chelsea signed Enzo Fernández and Moisés Caicedo in 2023 for more than £100 million each, however the deals were split between January and August.

Barcelona broke records in 2017-18 with Ousmane Dembélé and Philippe Coutinho, but those transactions occurred in different windows.

Liverpool have set a precedent by completing two nine-figure moves in a single window, something no other club has done before.

A Summer of Record Spending.

Liverpool’s overall spending over the summer exceeded £449 million, signifying a comprehensive squad revamp under new manager Arne Slot. Along with Isak and Wirtz, the club also signed Hugo Ekitike (£79 million), Milos Kerkez (£45 million), and Jeremie Frimpong (£35 million), among others.

The signing of Isak alone exceeded the whole summer spending of more than ten Premier League clubs.

For the time being, Liverpool will go down in football history as the first team to sign two players worth more than €100 million in one transfer window.
