A new political controversy has been triggered by Congress politician Shashi Tharoor’s birthday wish for former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani. The Congress has distanced itself from Tharoor’s comments, claiming he speaks for himself.
At Advani’s 98th birthday celebration on Sunday, Tharoor defended Advani’s political legacy, stating that the seasoned BJP leader “cannot be judged through one episode.” His “unwavering commitment to public service, modesty, and his role in shaping the trajectory of modern India” were commended by Tharoor.
Tharoor’s wishes were accused of distorting the BJP leader’s actual background. Sanjay Hedge, a Supreme Court advocate, criticized Tharoor, stating that Advani’s “unleashing the dragon seeds of hatred” could not be considered “public service,” citing the 1990 Ram Rath Yatra.
“Reducing his long years of service to one episode, however significant, is also unfair,” Tharoor wrote in response. Both Nehruji’s and Indira Gandhi’s careers cannot be evaluated solely on the basis of the China setback or the Emergency. I think we ought to treat Advaniji with the same respect.”
Sorry Mr Tharoor, unleashing the "dragon seeds of hatred" (to quote Kushwant Singh) in this country is NOT public service. https://t.co/geNBaAYTq9

Congress’s Response to Tharoor’s Statements
The Congress later disassociated itself from Tharoor’s statements, claiming that he speaks for himself and that the party’s liberal and democratic values are reflected in the fact that he still does so as a CWC member.
The chairman of the Indian National Congress’s media and publicity department, Pawan Khera, stated, “As usual, Dr. Shashi Tharoor speaks for himself and the Indian National Congress outright dissociates itself from his most recent statement.” He continued, “That he continues to do so as a Congress MP and CWC member reflects the essential democratic and liberal spirit unique to INC.”
Like always, Dr. Shashi Tharoor speaks for himself and the Indian National Congress outrightly dissociates itself from his most recent statement.

That he continues to do so as a Congress MP and CWC member reflects the essential democratic and liberal spirit unique to INC.
This year, Advani, who contributed to the BJP’s ascent in national politics, received the Bharat Ratna. On September 25, 1990, he organized the “Ram Rath Yatra” from Somnath, Gujarat, to demand that the Ram Janmabhoomi temple be built. Advani was arrested on the instructions of then-prime minister VP Singh after the event in Bihar was halted.
Two years after the yatra, on December 6, 1992, the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya was destroyed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted the “pran pratishtha” ceremony on January 22, 2024, marking the Ram Mandir’s official public opening.
Congress Is Slammed by the BJP
The BJP attacked Congress harshly for distancing itself from Tharoor’s statements, claiming that the MP from Thiruvananthapuram had fallen victim to the “latest fatwa of intolerance of Congress.”
Congress claims that Tharoor exclusively represents himself and not the party. Alright. Because only one family is permitted to speak on behalf of everyone in Congress! According to BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, “Tharoor just said politics has become a family business… and his own party instantly gave a live demo of it.”
Congress says Tharoor speaks only for himself — not for the party.

Fair enough. Because in Congress, only one family is allowed to speak for everyone! 😁

Shehzad Poonawalla of the BJP stated, “The Congress should rename itself as the Indira Nazi Congress instead of the Indian National Congress because they are exhibiting the sense of emergency under Indira and Nazi dictatorial behavior.” The only transgression committed by Shashi Tharoor was wishing Bharat Ratna recipient LK Advani a happy birthday out of political courtesy. The powerful members of Congress are now furious about it.”
He asserted that the Congress views its political competitors as “sworn mortal enemies” and has now issued a “fatwa” against Tharoor. He also recalled the government’s outreach initiative following Operation Sindoor, which included sending a number of opposition MPs to various nations.
“They (Congress) are so autocratic that they condemn and marginalize their own MP and senior leader for siding with India during Operation Sindoor. He is labeled as an outsider and a traitor when he correctly points out that the first family of Congress is in charge of legitimizing dynastic politics in this nation,” he continued.
