Wimbledon 2025: Twenty-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer witnessed Russian tennis sensation Mirra Andreeva’s match from the famous Royal Box at SW19 on Monday, fulfilling a longstanding goal.
Mirra Andreeva made a memorable debut on the Center Court. One of the sport’s most promising young players, the 18-year-old Russian, advanced to her first Wimbledon quarterfinal in spectacular way before quickly forgetting she had won the match.
In barely more than an hour, Andreeva defeated world No. 10 Emma Navarro 6-2, 6-3. However, the teen was so preoccupied on maintaining her rhythm and poise that she was unaware that she had converted a match point at a bizarre moment. Rather than celebrating, she took a step back to get ready for another Navarro serve, but she was finally brought back to reality by the crowd’s cheers and the umpire’s call.
Two days prior, following her victory in the third round, Andreeva was asked by the Tennis Channel who she would most like to see in the Royal Box. She mentioned Ryan Gosling, Andy Murray, and Roger Federer since she couldn’t decide on just one.
One of those dreams came true on Monday.
Under the watchful eye of her childhood hero, Federer and his wife Mirka watched from the Royal Box as Andreeva gave her most dominant Wimbledon performance to yet.
She stated, “I really tried my best not to look over there,” in her in-court statement. “I was aware that looking would cause me to lose all concentration. At 4-1, I did.
“I saw Mirka and Roger. To be honest, I really appreciate you coming to see my match. Seeing you in person has always been one of my dreams.
Andreeva couldn’t help but add: “I just wanted to quickly mention that you look really lovely, Mirka. I think your attire is great.
Andreeva is the youngest woman to go to the Wimbledon quarterfinals since 2006 and has yet to lose a set in the event despite her nervousness. She hopes to duplicate her 2024 Roland Garros performance, where she also advanced to the round of eight, when she takes on Olympic gold medallist Belinda Bencic on Wednesday.
Prior doing it, though, she has another crucial duty to attend to: coaching.
Conchita Martnez, a 1994 Wimbledon finalist and her own instructor, is scheduled to compete in the legends’ doubles, and Andreeva intends to repay her in a lighthearted manner.
