Following a ruling by the Calcutta High Court, the case—which was first looked into by the West Bengal Police—has now been turned over to the CBI.
In relation to a 2019 post-election violence case in Sandeshkhali, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a formal complaint (FIR) against former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan. In addition to Sheikh, 24 other people’s names are included in the FIR.
The case concerns the 2019 post-election violence that resulted in the deaths of three BJP employees: Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal, and Sukanta Mondal.
Following an alleged attack on their Sandeshkhali hamlet by a crowd purportedly led by Sheikh, Pradeep Mondal, Devdas Mondal, and Sukanta Mondal were discovered dead.
The matter was first being investigated by West Bengal Police, but the victims’ relatives then petitioned the Calcutta High Court for a CBI investigation.
In order to investigate the case with “utmost seriousness,” Justice Joy Sengupta has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to form a special investigation team (SIT). The court ruled that a joint director should oversee the probe.
I believe there was an egregious miscarriage of justice in this case as well, which involves even more serious allegations, because the police declined to prosecute the principal accused at various points. Therefore, it would not be in the interest of justice to give them control of the investigation once more,” Justice Sengupta said as he turned the probe over to the CBI.
