When Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the Mumbai Indians to maintain their impressive start to the IPL 2025 season, Virat Kohli was naturally overjoyed.
Tilak Varma hit a half-century off 26 balls and raised 89 runs for the fifth wicket with Hardik Pandya after being pulled out injured by the Mumbai Indians in their previous game. However, their efforts were in vain as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated the five-time champions by 12 runs in Match 21 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 here on Monday. The Mumbai Indians went from needing 132 off 56 balls to 41 off 18 thanks to a spectacular 56 off 29 balls from Varma and a thunderous 42 off 15 from captain Hardik Pandya. However, Josh Hazlewood grabbed Hardik in the final overs, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Varma, ending RCB’s incredible comeback.
Mumbai lost when Krunal Pandya took three wickets in the last over, including Mitchell Santner, who hit a six off Hazlewood, and Deepak Chahar from consecutive balls. Mumbai needed 28 runs off 12 balls.

In a thrilling match against MI, Krunal got Naman Dhir on the fifth ball to complete the score of 12 required off two balls to go to a super over, even though Boult survived the hat-trick delivery, a wide, and a four from Dhir.
After fast-paced half-centuries by Virat Kohli (67) and Rajat Patidar (64) helped RCB post a massive 221/5 to register their first win at the Wankhede Stadium since 2015 and break a 10-year jinx, Krunal Pandya finished with 4-45, while Yash Dayal (2-46) and Hazlewood (2-37) came good with the ball to restrict Mumbai Indians to 209/9.
The Mumbai Indians were in trouble after being thrashed by the RCB batsmen, when Dayal and Hazlewood dismissed Rohit Sharma (17 off 9) and Ryan Rickelton (17 off 10). Mumbai lost the match as a result of Will Jacks starting and scoring 22 runs off of 18 balls and Suryakumar Yadav (28 off 26 balls) finding it difficult to score against Suyash Sharma and Krunal.
Hardik and Tilak Varma, who had retired after struggling to hit boundaries against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), made some outstanding shots to put Mumbai back on track, but Krunal Pandya’s genius caused things to fall apart.
Despite losing Phil Salt (4) to Trent Boult on the second ball of the match, Royal Challengers Bengaluru got off to a fast start after being asked to bat first.
Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal struck sixes and boundaries off Bout, Deepak Chahar, Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Vignesh Puthur as they hammered 91 runs for the second wicket. Padikkal hit a four after hitting consecutive sixes through mid-on and mid-wicket in Chahar’s second delivery. RCH reached 73.1 in six overs by the end of the power-play.
Virat Kohli reached his 29-ball fifty with eight fours and two sixes, one off Bumrah and one off Puthur, which was hit on one knee. Padikkal left for 37 off 22 balls, hitting eight boundaries and two sixes.
Naman Dhir made an easy catch at deep mid-wicket after Kohli misplayed a back-of-length ball wide outside off while attempting to create a boundary behind square on the leg side, ending Pandya’s India teammate’s hopes of scoring his first century of the season. Kohli achieved his second half-century of the season with 67 off 42. Pandya dismissed Liam Livingstone for a two-ball duck, but Patidar and Jitesh Sharma made sure the RCB scored a significant amount.
In a demonstration of pure power striking, Patidar made some incredible shots. Alongside Jitesh Sharma, he scored 69 runs for the fifth wicket after blasting to his fifty off 25 balls.
In the 17th over, Patidar and Sharma hit Pandya for 23 runs. The former hit two sixes and a four off consecutive deliveries, while the latter hit a four. Before the New Zealand pacer got Patidar for 64, caught by keeper Ryan Rickelton off an attempted scoop, they dominated Boult for 15 runs in the 19th over.
As RCB scored a huge total, Jitesh Sharma delivered a couple of powerful knocks and remained undefeated at 40 off 19 balls. In the last delivery, he hit Bumrah for a huge six.
