Days after Diljit Dosanjh declared that his movie Punjab ’95 will be released globally the next month, the Punjabi singer-actor declared on Monday that it would not be.
The film, which faced issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), would be released for overseas audiences on February 7, Diljit Dosanjh said last Friday. Dosanjh also released the trailer for the eagerly awaited movie, which was produced by Ronnie Screwvala and directed by Honey Trehan.
On Instagram Monday, his team and the film’s producer, Honey Trehan, posted, “We are very sorry and it pains us to inform you that the movie Punjab ’95 will not release on February 7th due to Circumstances Beyond Our Control.”
The life of human rights advocate Jaswant Singh Khalra, who revealed the extrajudicial executions of Sikh men by the Punjab Police during the militancy in the late 1990s, is the basis for Punjab ’95. In 1995, he was abducted and killed. Six Punjab Police officials were later found guilty of his kidnapping and murder.
Khalra’s wife, Paramjit Kaur Khalra, stated that the biopic about her husband’s life was done with the family’s approval and ought to be released uncut after the Censor Board suggested 120 cuts to the movie.
His wife claims that after reading the script more than four years ago, her family gave director Honey Trehan permission to use Dosanjh as Khalra in the film. She added that they saw the movie in 2022 as well and were pleased with how it portrayed Khalra’s fight for human rights during a pivotal juncture in Punjab’s history.
