Targeting migrant students in the United States has intensified the storm that was already building. The US government is being challenged by over 100 colleges and universities, including the prestigious Ivy League schools.
They have all vehemently denounced President Donald Trump’s “political interference” in the educational system in the United States. The action was taken a day after the Trump Administration was sued by Harvard University, the nation’s best university, for slashing billions of dollars in funding and placing political oversight on the university.
“We speak with one voice against the unprecedented government overreach and political interference now endangering American higher education,” the universities and colleges wrote in a united letter denouncing President Trump’s intrusion. We do not oppose proper government monitoring and are receptive to meaningful reform. But we have to fight excessive government interference.
Additionally, the letter declares, “We must reject the coercive use of public research funding.”

Donald Trump has targeted American schools and universities, alleging that staff and students have been permitted to engage in “anti-Semitic” activities on campus. Additionally, the President has attacked schools for allegedly fostering “woke” culture and “dividing America” over diversity policies that the government has since abandoned.
In order to address the issue, President Trump has made threats of severe budget cutbacks, revoked tax exemptions, restricted the number of international students, and, in the instance of Harvard, treated the university as a “political entity” in order to attack educational institutions across the United States. Additionally, the US President has mandated that all educational institutions undergo external audits and modify their hiring practices for professors. While the Trump Administration has targeted institutions, it has also launched a broad immigration crackdown that has resulted in the revocation of foreign students’ visas for little to no reason.
The White House has defended the steps by arguing that anti-Semitism was rampant during the demonstrations against Israel’s war in Gaza that swept through US college campuses last year. Additionally, according to the Trump administration, America’s elite institutions have become overly “left-wing”.
THE GOVERNMENT IS SUED BY HARVARD
Harvard University refused to follow the President’s orders, whereas the majority of elite colleges, including Ivy League schools like Columbia, which faced financial peril, complied with US government requests. With billions of dollars in funding at stake, the top university has made the decision to sue the Trump administration.
“This case involves the Government’s efforts to use the withholding of federal funding as leverage to gain control of academic decision making at Harvard,” claimed the Ivy League university in a lawsuit submitted to a federal court in Massachusetts.
Harvard University claimed in its lawsuit that President Trump’s actions were “arbitrary and capricious” and that “The Government’s actions flout not just the First Amendment, but also federal laws and regulations.”
Last Monday, the Trump administration directed that $2.2 billion in government funds be frozen for the organization. Additionally, Harvard’s ability to accept international students was threatened by the Department of Homeland Security unless it turned over documents pertaining to the “illegal and violent activities” of visa holders.
The Harvard University website states that, based on the most recent academic year data, international students make up over 27% of all students enrolled at the university.
